UP Naming Mahal Remixed

Next year, the University of the Philippines (UP) will celebrate its centenary. I was surprised to know that the school hymn, “UP Naming Mahal” is going to be replaced next year with a new set of lyrics and a new rhythm and will be implemented systemwide. The new lyrics focuses on the duties and responsibilities of a UP graduate and that is serving the country.

UP Naming Mahal (new version)

UP naming mahal
Pamantasan ng bayan
Tinig ng masa
Ang siyang lagi nang pakikinggan

Malayong lupain
Di kailangang marating
Dito maglilingkod sa bayan natin
Dito maglilingkod sa bayan natin

Silangang mapula
Sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipaglaban
Laya ng diwa’t kaisipan

Humayo’t itanghal
Giting, tapang at dangal
Mabuhay ang lingkod ng taong bayan
Mabuhay ang lingkod ng taong bayan!

While the new lyrics appear to be more timely and would say more appropriate to current time, I guess the “new version” should be just an alternative to the current one rather than completely archiving the old one. For most graduates who are accustomed to the old one, nothing beats the classic especially remembering those memories when the song was sung in most of the student rallies that I have attended to.  Here’s the lyrics of the current version, the one made by Nicanor Abelardo –

U.P. Naming Mahal
Pamantasang hirang
Ang tinig namin
Sana’y inyong dinggin
Malayong lupain
Amin mang marating
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin

Luntian at pula
Sagisag magkailan man
Ating pagdiwang
Bulwagan ng dangal
Humayo’t itanghal
Giting at tapang
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan

Here’s the copy of the new song. However, you need to rename the file to a .mp3 extension since wordpress doesn’t accept MP3 files as an upload to the blog account.
